This is how we do it ~
Intrepid’s requested scope for the 51 Panacea was simple – update the 47 Panacea to include the dual rows of helm seats as standard without losing cockpit space, refine our transom baitwell / seating / access gate design, and assure the new open transom layout allows for quad Merc 600s. The confidence of the simple scope was that Carr Design would build upon our design direction successfully implemented throughout the previous Intrepid model lines!
The Intrepid 427 series was also on our boards at this time and stepped ahead of the initial 51 Panacea development. With stacked projects, the design focus included concurrent development for the critical console forms. We had progressed well with the new Nomad console designs encompassing the framed windshields and wetbar arches, integrated into the new hardtops. The design ques were established, and our focus now was to rethink the larger 42/51 assemblies. This component group included the console through its interior pan and headliner, and the integration of console-windshield-hardtop-arches-wetbar-seating. The component groups are one structure once assembled, with each component requiring complex multipart tools and nesting. The hulls and decks also required multipart tooling to incorporate all of the undercut and built-in features of the unibody design.
Special thanks and huge appreciation to Intrepid’s engineering group for their true-to-concept design development! The decks, consoles, hulls, and interior liners, modules, and furniture all go through many hands ahead of the extensive tooling and component development. As well, there are countless critical decisions, new ideas, system configurations, and custom hardware parts to bring the first prototype to a grand introduction!
Our collaboration established a lot of new design language – DNA – as we developed the Nomad, Valor, Panacea, and Evolution product lines since introducing the first 475 Panacea (2012). The new Intrepid brand DNA included numerous design and feature parameters, refined form development, and compulsive attention to ergonomics. Incorporating these design elements with the increased 51 project size provided an opportunity to deliver a fantastic new flagship!
New Intrepid brand DNA elements included:
• Refined development of surface forms, deck and house detailing
• Unibody deck tool – all undercut forms integrated as single molded part
• Foredeck water rail aft of anchor hatch, blends to side-deck storage and toe rail
• Forward seating cove detail that includes grab rails, drink holders, and storage access
• Refined actuating bow seat and seat back rod lockers
• Forward hi / low table that stores flush or at sunpad level
• Forward side-deck storage lockers, spec’d to purpose – captures aft end of bow seat
• Retain flush side deck built-in coolers
• Side-deck access steps in bulwarks
• Transom baitwells with fold out seat and transom access gate
• Transom rod holder feature
• Open transom platform for Merc power
• Swim platform integration / wrap to hullsides
• Console detailing of new design language, through 2 rows of 4-wide helm seating
• Console through hardtop integration: wet bar / seating / arches / hardtop / windshield / console
• Create-refine-rethink-perfect the console helm – sightlines, ergonomics, screen area, panel layout
• Modular console assembly plan to allow helm rigging independent of console build
• Maximized single windshield for up to 4-wide helm seats – visibility, wind protection, ventilation
• Forward row helm seat base with grab rails, drink holders, storage compartments and open bins
• Full service wetbar between arches, with optional seating configurations
• Hardtop surface detailing, built-in ventilation / sun shade / electronics and component nesting
• Hardtop water-rail for drip-free side-deck passage
• Foward console sunpad layout with actuated back for seated position
• Console entry system with pantograph hardware for clear side-deck passage
• Console windowline design for Panacea series
The Intrepid 51 Panacea interior package would incorporate the detailing of our Evolution series, and the refined head design of our 40 Panacea. We pushed hard for Intrepid to maximize storage opportunities, which would become a high point once presented.
New Intrepid brand DNA for the interior:
• Improved space planning, distinctive layouts
• Careful ergonomic planning, particular companionway entry
• Contemporary finishes
• Dedicated TV locations
• Increased refrigerator volume
• Maximized storage opportunities
• Planned storage of filler cushions
• Modular component development and part nesting
• Modern vanity design, nested parts with inset countertops
• Head cabinetry allows easy access to helm systems underside
• Well-considered access to systems, bilge, and AC unit(s)
